Compass Box Secrets of Smoke is a limited-edition blended malt Scotch whisky from lead whiskymaker James Saxon, built around three peated single malts finished in unconventional casks. Caol Ila matured in Palo Cortado sherry-seasoned butts brings toffee apple notes, The Peat Monster (Compass Box's own Islay blend) rested in refill red wine barrels contributes bright cherry, and Laphroaig finished in Marsala barriques adds blueberry flapjack sweetness. Bottled at 52% ABV, naturally colored and non-chill-filtered, it opens with coastal smoke that gives way to honeyed richness, toasted marshmallow, and buttery pear. The palate turns oily and spicy with pear, peach, and melon brightening into citrus, finishing long, chocolatey, and peaty. Only 9,792 bottles were released, so this is a genuinely limited pour. Try a small splash of soda water to open up the fruit and sweetness even further.
